President Asif Ali Zardari officially launched the Benazir Skilled Youth Program at a prestigious ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Saturday. The event was attended by First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, Punjab Governor Sardar Salim Haider Khan, federal ministers, members of parliament, foreign diplomats, Chairperson BISP Senator Rubina Khalid, and other prominent figures.
Speaking on the occasion, President Zardari said the new initiative reflects the vision of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the mission of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to empower the underprivileged through education and skill development. “We are carrying forward their legacy by equipping youth, particularly children of laborers, with modern skills to help them support their families and serve the nation,” he stated.
The President emphasized the importance of technology and technical education, noting that the Benazir Skilled Youth Program will offer training in fields such as computer technology and foreign languages, including German and Chinese. He also highlighted the growing global demand for skilled professionals, especially in nursing, and stressed the need for international-standard training in Pakistan.
He praised the efforts of former finance minister Syed Naveed Qamar in initiating the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) back in 2008, acknowledging its transformation into a globally recognized model of social welfare. “Today, millions of families are benefiting from BISP, and we are proud of its evolution into a symbol of dignity and empowerment for women and youth,” the President said.
Earlier, Chairperson BISP Senator Rubina Khalid in her address described the launch of the Benazir Skilled Youth Program as the fulfillment of a long-standing promise made by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto to empower the youth. “This initiative will secure the future of our young population by equipping them with high-demand skills,” she remarked.
She further stated that BISP has played a pivotal role in providing financial stability to deserving women, especially during crises like the 2022 floods and COVID-19 pandemic. She also acknowledged the German government’s support and described BISP as not just a social program but a movement against poverty.
BISP Secretary Aamir Ali Ahmed also spoke at the ceremony, emphasizing that the program has significantly contributed to poverty alleviation and women’s welfare. He revealed that a budget of Rs. 716 billion has been allocated for BISP in the upcoming fiscal year, underlining the government’s commitment to expanding its impact.
In a symbolic gesture, President Zardari, along with the guests, also cut a birthday cake in honor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, marking the occasion with remembrance and celebration of her enduring legacy.
The launch of the Benazir Skilled Youth Program signifies a major step forward in Pakistan’s mission to empower its youth, reduce poverty, and build a self-reliant nation.
