2026 FIFA World Cup Under Pressure from Rising Climate Risks
September 10, 2025 Admin

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has already begun, but fresh research suggests the beautiful game could be facing a not-so-beautiful challenge: climate extremes. A detailed climate impact assessment has revealed that 14 out of the 16 host venues across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are vulnerable to unsafe playing conditions.

From scorching summer heat waves to intense rainfall and even the threat of flooding, many stadiums fall into what scientists call “high risk” zones. This isn’t just about players struggling under the sun—it’s about the safety of thousands of fans in packed stands, match officials on the ground, and the broader infrastructure needed to host one of the world’s largest sporting spectacles.

The 2026 edition was expected to be historic, not just because it will involve 48 teams for the first time, but also due to its scale—spanning three countries. However, experts are warning that without serious climate adaptation measures such as better stadium cooling systems, flexible match timings, and emergency response planning, the event could see disruptions.

Sports analysts are already pointing out that the issue is bigger than football. Global warming is increasingly dictating how large events are planned, whether it’s the Olympics, cricket tournaments, or the World Cup. For millions of fans who dream of witnessing history from the stands, the key question now is: Will the organizers score an early win against climate risks, or be forced into last-minute defensive play?

Pakistan has 6,000 Medicinal Plants with a Long History of Traditional Use
September 17, 2025 Admin

Prof. Dr. Zabta Khan Shinwari, Vice Chancellor of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (FUUAST), has said that Pakistan is home to 6,000 medicinal plant species with a long history of traditional use, and these natural resources can play a vital role in the country’s sustainable development.

He noted that the fusion of traditional herbal wisdom with the cutting-edge science of nanotechnology represents the future of natural medicine, adding that nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field integrating applications from biology, engineering, physics, and chemistry.

Prof. Shinwari expressed these views while delivering a special lecture titled “From Lab to Lifestyle: Advancing Herbal Medicine Through Nanotechnology and Clinical Trials”, organized by the UNESCO Chair on Medicinal and Bio-Organic Natural Product Chemistry at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi. The event, held on Tuesday evening, was attended by a large number of students, researchers, and faculty members.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah, Director of ICCBS and UNESCO Chair Holder, also delivered introductory remarks on the occasion.

Highlighting the rising global demand for safe, effective, and natural healthcare solutions, Prof. Shinwari said that modern scientific rigor is helping bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and biodiversity. He emphasized that Pakistan has the opportunity to generate positive economic and health outcomes by combining medicinal plants with nanotechnology.

He added that the herbal medicine market is projected to reach USD 532.05 billion by 2030, noting that globally, 80 percent of the population uses herbs, while in developing countries usage rates could be as high as 95 percent.

In the field of medicinal plant research, he explained, industry partners can provide the technology for large-scale production, while academia can focus on identifying and extracting valuable bioactive compounds from plants. He further stated that establishing the Herbal Clinical Trial Institute is fundamental to the mission of advancing herbal medicine in Pakistan.

Prof. Shinwari underscored that herbal clinical trials are crucial for advancing healthcare and promoting evidence-based practices. Referring to the Qarshi-FUUAST Clinic, he described it as a new model for wellness.

Speaking on the global burden of cancer, he said it remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for 8.8 million deaths in 2015. In Pakistan, he noted, around 178,388 new breast cancer cases were registered in 2020, with nearly 40,000 women dying from the disease annually — an average of 109 deaths every 24 hours. He added that one in eight women in Pakistan suffers from breast cancer.

In conclusion, he urged the research community to work collectively to foster a culture of holistic health and academic excellence, while also advancing the country’s diagnostic and research capacities.
